Ethical Sourcing: Locating and Using Sources Responsibly

When students write about complex topics, they often refer to sources to inform their opinions and support arguments. Good writers choose good sources and use them responsibly in writing. Additionally, the push for digital literacy means that students need to be taught to be ethical researchers, even at the beginning levels of education. This paper presentation will offer strategies that direct students to ethically sourced research material, help students use sources responsibly in the classroom, and give students language that indicates where source material is present in writing. Teachers at multiple levels--from beginner classes to advanced classes--can use these strategies to reinforce the values of ethical research and responsibility in writing.
