A Contemporary Approach to Vocabulary Enhancement: Multi-Word Units in English

Corpus-driven approaches to English vocabulary have convincingly shown that multi-word units, e.g. collocations, lexical bundles, rather than single words should be prioritised in second language acquisition. The aim of the workshop is to give a brief overview of recent developments in vocabulary research and suggest ways how the teaching of collocations, lexical bundles and other fixed expressions might enhance learning outcomes. Participants of the seminar will learn to recognise multi-word units in learner speech and writing which will enable them to assess their students' lexical competence more objectively. The seminar will also offer a number of ways to teach multi-word units to intermediate and advanced learners while practical tasks and discussions will involve activities that could be used in class.
