The updated curriculum for foreign languages places stronger emphasis on integrating the Lithuanian context into foreign language teaching and learning. It introduces topics such as the Lithuanian language and world languages, multilingualism in Lithuania, national history and geography, local and regional cultural life, prominent cultural figures, heritage, landmarks, Lithuania’s participation in international organizations, as well as themes of peace and solidarity. While teaching materials developed by international publishers are highly valuable, they lack references to Lithuania. This seminar will present supplementary resources designed to address this gap, with a particular focus on mediation activities and the development of mediation skills. Such activities provide an effective and engaging way for students to share their experiences, ideas, and perspectives on their identity as Lithuanians.

Dr. Eglė Petronienė has been teaching courses in English Philology and Pedagogy (in Vilnius Pedagogical University/ Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences / VMU Education Academy) for over 30 years to student-teachers and has organized and delivered in-service teacher professional development training for the past two decades. As a linguist, she takes a functional approach to language. As a teacher, she closely follows recent developments in foreign language teaching and learning, especially those outlined in the CEFR Companion Volume, which she considers the most comprehensive guide in the field. Eglė strongly believes in the effectiveness of the action-oriented, task-based approach, viewing mediation as central to understanding how people use language. Her professional goal is to engage students in purposeful learning, helping them enjoy the process while becoming more confident, capable, and independent language users. She also values collaboration and the exchange of ideas with colleagues, seeing it as a source of mutual growth and inspiration.
