Saulius Skučas has a master’s degree in English culture and literature from the English Department of Vytautas Magnus University (2010). He is a teacher expert of English in the national programme (grades 9-12) as well as an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme English A: literature teacher (grades 11-12) at Kaunas Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium. He is also a teacher of the English Language Arts subject for the school’s Bilingual Education programme students (grades 9-10). From 2020 to 2022 he worked as a consultant at the Lithuanian National Education Agency (NŠA).

The process of revision of the National Curriculum in Lithuania has brought a number of important changes for the teachers of English as a foreign language. The National Curriculum for Foreign (First and Second) Languages is introducing new content which echoes educational tendencies of foreign language teaching in other European countries and beyond. The main source of new content for foreign language teaching and learning is ‘Common European Framework for Languages – Companion Volume’ (Council of Europe 2020). English teachers in Lithuania face the need to familiarise themselves with the new principles implemented in the National Curriculum for the First Foreign Language and get better prepared to introduce the new content into the teaching process. This practical seminar is intended for teachers of English working with students in grades 9-12, during which the teachers will get acquainted with different ways of integrating fiction (i.e. literary texts of prose, poetry and drama) in their everyday practice while working within the renewed English language curriculum. Seminar participants will receive at least ten ready-made lessons to implement with their students. Teachers will also learn ways to analyse literary texts and connect them with the topics discussed in class as well as with the renewed curriculum and to use literature to teach grammar and the use of English.
