Integrating Scientific Skills into Learning Cultures

In many societies, values education may be limited within the context of local beliefs and doctrine. However, today’s global citizenship entails a strong awareness of moral, social and cultural understanding and active participation in global issues, a common goal for EFL learners beyond their proficiency in English language. In this presentation, I will show how my small group of EFL students from Thailand were trained to integrate cognitive skills common in scientific enquiry, namely – decomposition, pattern recognition and abstraction – into their analyses of social issues from around the world. The process of learning of culture includes breaking down social problems into smaller manageable issues, discuss solutions and consider relevant facts, leading to improvement of the students’ own quality of judgements.
